Report: Day One of Women’s Division One Regional Zonal Championship
The Women’s Division One Regional Zonal Championship commenced on Friday, October 8, 2021 in the Northern Zone at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale.
Winners of the Brong Ahafo Regional Division One League, Fosu Royals got us underway when they played against Upper West Regional representatives, Real Crusaders Ladies.
The match seemed easy for the Brong Ahafo side as they thrashed their opponents by 10-1.
Mabel Amoyaw was the highest scorer on the day as she put five past Salimu Imoro.
The shot stopper had a hectic day in post with Sandra Ankomah also scoring a brace. Yazdadatu Suleiman got the consolation goal for her side on the 83th minute.
The second match of the day also recorded a cricket score line as FC Savannah beat Dynamites Ladies by eleven goals to one.
The Northern Regional winners seemed too strong for the Ashanti Regional runners up.
Karima Abdullai scored five, Abdul Hanan Salina scored four and a brace from Mary Averu. It was a busy day for Barichisu Azaare in between the sticks as she conceded eleven. Doreen Sarfowaa scored the consolation for Dynamites Ladies.
In a festival of goals at the Aliu Mahama stadium, the last game of the day was played between Dreamz Ladies and Zicom Ladies which saw only 5 goals.
Dreamz Ladies started stronger and broke the deadlock in 10th minute and Charlotte Sarpong added a second but Zicom Ladies responded by pulling one back in the 17th minute. Dreamz went ahead to win the game by 4 goals to one.
The Southern Zone got underway on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the Madina Zorak Park in Accra.
First match of the day was between Essiam Socrates and Greater Accra Regional Champions, Faith Ladies.
Essiam Socrates had a tough task coming into this match and Faith Ladies proved stronger as they carried the day with. 3-0 win.
Jennifer Kankam scored a brace as Alexander Ama also had her name of the score sheet.
Army Ladies came up against Basake Royal Ladies in the second game of the day. Army Ladies came into this competition having lost the final of the Greater Accra Regional Championship and looked to prove a point to make it to next seasons WPL.
Midfield sensation, Zinat Alhassan scored a beautiful free kick to put Army Ladies ahead 16 minutes into the game.
Elizabeth Adoma deepened the woes of Basake Royal ladies when she scored a brace to make it 3-0. Cynthia Okine and Nancy Opoku ensured their names were on the score sheet and that made it 5 for Army Ladies.
Sarah Armah scored a lovely solo goal on the 46th minute as a consolation to Basake Royals.
Anlo Ladies hosted Valued girls in the last game of the day. Anlo Ladies looked to represent the Volta Region with bliss but the unbeaten champions of the Eastern Region were too strong for them. Nusimebia Kudzo scored the first goal of the game on the 7th minute for Anlo Ladies but that didn’t last as Dorcas Manu and Regina Agbalati each with a brace put four past Avugbe Mawunyo.
The competition is expected to continue this week.
Top two teams in each zone after the competition will gain promotion to next season’s Women’s Elite League.
