The Richest Competitions in African Football
The African continent has churned out some of the most incredible talents in the world of football. These superstars usually compete in different leagues around the world, including within the African continent.
In Africa, top teams celebrate in local leagues and continental tournaments. The competitions have also attracted the attention of soccer betting fans on Betway. Have you ever wondered what the prize money for the African football competitions is?
Here is a breakdown of some of the most valuable African football competitions.
The Confederation Cup
CAF increased the prize money to be distributed among the sixteen teams participating in the competition. In the new prize scheme, the winner takes home 1.25 million USD. On the other hand, the tournament’s runners-up pocket 625000 USD. Other prizes include 450000 USD for the semi-finalists and 350000 USD for the quarter-finalists.
The tournament started in 2004 and brings clubs together which qualify based on their performance in their domestic leagues and cup competitions.
The Confederations Cup is the second-tier competition in African football, ranking below the Champions League. All the local league cup winners from all the 55 CAF member associations are eligible to participate. Additionally, the third-placed clubs in the top 12 placed CAF members qualify for this tournament.
African Cup of Nations
This tournament’s participants were increased from 16 to 24 teams. The winner of this tournament takes home 4.5 million USD while the runner-up pockets 2.5 million USD. On the other hand, the semi-finalist takes home 2 million USD while the quarter-finals wins 1 million USD.
Egypt is the most prosperous nation in AFCON history. The Egyptians have lifted the trophy seven times. In 2013, the tournament’s format was changed to be held in odd-numbered years to avoid clashing with the World Cup. It is also one of the African tournaments that soccer betting fans on Betway like to wager on.
CAF Super Cup
The winner of the 2020 Super Cup grabbed a maximum prize of 200000 USD. In 2018, the winner took home 100000 USD, but the money was doubled in the 2019 season.
Raja Casablanca won 200000 in the 2019 competition, and the team that lost in the 2020 final got 150000 USD. In the 2017 and 2018 Caf Super Cup, the runners-up in the tournament took home 75000 USD.
Initially, the competition was a contest between the teams that won the previous Champions League (African Cup of Champions Clubs between 1964 to 1996). It was referred to as African Cup Winners’ Cup until 2004.
The last Super Cup was the 2004 competition between Enyimba and Etoile du Sahel. Enyimba won the match 1-0.
In the meantime, the African Nations Championship held biannually for home-based players is also worth 1.25 million USD.
Final Thought
The African football competitions might not have the same prize money as the European competitions, but they usually attract the attention of the global soccer fans. Top European Clubs also send their scouts to the tournament to identify emerging talents.
