Who is Thomas Partey?

Thomas is a 28-year-old midfielder born in Krobo Odumase in Ghana. The Ghanian experienced midfielder plays for Arsenal and Ghana national team. His career began at the Spanish club Atletico Madrid in 2013, playing on loan at Mallorca and Almeria. He later returned to Atletico Madrid in 2015, helped the team win the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2018. His skills attracted Arteta, who made a £45 million deal making him the most expensive Ghanian player. Thomas represented Ghana at two Africa Cup of Nations matches. He won the CAF Team in 2018 and Ghana Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019.

Thomas Partey at Athletico Madrid

He replaced Luciano Vietto on 28th November 2015 in a 1-0 home win against Espanyol.  On 2nd January 2016, he scored his first league goal for the club against Levante. During the UEFA Champions League final, Party replaced Koke in the 116th minute, but the team lost at penalties. His impressive appearances at the club landed him another contract on 1st  March 2018. He equalized against Qarabag in a 1-1 draw in the champions league group stage. On 16th May 2018, his team won the Europa Champions League after thrashing Marseille 3-0. It is after Athletico was down 2-0 that his late substitution changed the game after netting during the last minute of the game.  Athletico won 3-2.  Four weeks later, his incredible performance made him the man of the match during the Madrid derby that ended 0-0. At the beginning of the 2020-2021 season, he left Athletico, having made adequate appearances eligible to win La Liga that year.

Thomas Partey’s career at Arsenal

After signing a long-term contract at Arsenal on 5th October  2020, he was given the jersey number 18 won by Nacho Monreal in the previous season. He played his first match against Manchester City as a substitute for Granit Xhaka, where Arsenal lost 0-1. Partey started his first match with 2-1 against Aston Villa in the UEFA Europa League on 8th November.

His career at Arsenal has suffered significant setbacks due to substantial injuries.  Despite Arsenal winning against Aston Villa, Partey sustained a  thigh injury, losing the rest of the month. During the North London Derby on 6th December, he suffered another injury before halftime and his team lost 2-0 to Tottenham. After a month, he made an appearance in a match against Crystal Palace that ended in a 0-0 draw.

Last season Partey missed ten matches caused by various injury issues. The midfielder picked up another injury during a pre-season game with Chelsea on Sunday. He underwent a scan on Monday that revealed he would only be out for a few weeks.

Mikel Arteta views Thomas as a key player in his rebuild as the club prepares to improve from the last season’s eighth position. Missing in action is such a big blow for the team especially facing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and Manchester City away match on 28th August.

Will Arsenal transfers amplify with Partey’s injury blow?

The League is kicking off soon, with Arsenal facing some of the giants in the Premier League. However, having the best midfielder injured is a tough pill to swallow for the fans. Some claim that Partey’s injury might call for action in the transfer market and bring an equal replacement. Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, and Sambi Lokanga are Arsenal’s midfielders who don’t seem to depart. There were advance talks on Granit Xhaka’s moves to Roma; however, Mikel Arteta argued that the Switzerland player would stay at Arsenal and possibly sign a new contract.

Arsenal is on the verge of accepting the Newcastle  21-year-old Joe Willock with a £22 million bid. Bringing the young talent back at the club will boost the transfer kitty and allow Arsenal to move after its targets with vigor. However, Arsenal makes slow but steady approaches with many signings happening on the deadline day.  Arsenal fans are yet to see whether Arteta will change the old norm by signing a new deal before the season kicks off. In addition, Arsenal should fasten their contracts and bring new talent before August 31.
