Throwback: Ghana come from behind to beat Nigeria 2-1 at AFCON 2008 – Watch
Ahead of the first leg meeting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff game between Ghana and Nigeria, let’s recap one of the most exciting fixtures between the two rival national teams.
At the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament hosted in Ghana, the Black Stars locked horns with the Super Eagles at the quarter-final stage.
On the matchday at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Nigeria took the lead through striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni after the side was awarded a penalty kick.
Late in the first half, a Michael Essien powerful header restored parity for Ghana to give the Black Stars a chance to win the game.
After recess, Ghana continued to push and finally completed a 2-1 comeback win courtesy of a tap-in from late striker Junior Agogo.
