Takoradi based Wheelchair tennis player, Mr Bernard Yawson has emerged the winner of the 2023 Ultimega Solutions National Wheelchair Tennis Ranking title.

The win moves Yawson ranked No. 2 last year to the No. 1 spot of the country ranking ie. Ghana’s No. 1 Wheelchair Tennis player.

The staunch player came ahead his major contender, McClean Atsu Dzidzienyo, ranked 7th in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win in the finals which took place at the Accra Sport Stadium on Friday, January 27, 2023 to clinch to the coveted title.

Affectionately called BENBLESS in the tennis fraternity, Yawson also beat national No. 3 spot title holder Abdul Razak Nuhu in the semifinals.

Top three ranking

The passionate tennis star was followed by Daniel Laryea, the 2022 top spot holder as No. 2, while Abdul Razak Nuhu maintains his No. 3 spot held last year.

The No. 1 seed has always been my aim – Bernard Yawson

Speaking to GhanaPlus.com, Mr Yawson said it has always been his dream to attain such a feet in the sport since his debut in 2018 hence he is elated he has been able to achieve it at last.

“The No. 1 seed has been my first aim since I started playing, and now I’m very happy to carry it,” he said.

He said his dreams does not end here; he wishes to pursue more enviable height in Africa and in the world ranking as well.

“My next target is to be in the first five players in Africa and first 50 in the World ranking by end of the year if I get more tournaments to participate”.

He promised Ghanaians much better and improved version of himself as far as the sport is concerned to put Ghana on the world map and pray for their support and prayers for him.

“I knew being a champion people will expect much from you and you have to deliver it to prove that you deserve it,’ Yawson said.
