Mahama supports Ketu tidal wave victims with a trailer of relief items

The former President, Mr John Dramani Mahama has presented dozens of relief items to the Keta tidal wave disaster victims in the Volta Region.

The one trailer items, includes 3,000 mattresses, 1,000 bags if rice and 2,000 pieces of canned fish.

The items worth millions of Ghana Cedis also includes 2,000 pieces of canned tomatoes and  2,000 liters  of cooking oil.

Mr Mahama was accompanied by some Members of Parliament of the Region during his visit to the area.

Presenting the items, Mr Mahama called on state agencies, the National Disaster Management Organisation(NADMO), most especially, to increase its commitment in providing support for the victims.

Tidal wave hit Keta

More than 2, 000 resident of Keta and its surrounding communities  are currently homeless following a tidal wave disaster in the area on Saturday, November 6.

Hundreds of homes in the predominately fishing community have been washed away with many others submerged in the sea water.

At least one school and a cemetery in the area have also also affected by the tidal waves.

Again, livelihood have been severely affected since the incident.

However, government is yet to provide proper relief to the people of the area.

Come to our aid, Keta South MP appeals

Member of Parliament for the Ketu South constituency, Ms Dzifa Abla Gomahsie disclosed, government earlier support to the victims was woefully  inadequate.

“The state of emergency should have been declared yesterday [ Sunday]” she told journalists on Monday November 8 on the heels of the tidal waves that affected Keta and its environs on Saturday, November 6, that has destroyed properties and rendered about 700 people homeless in the area,” she said.

She has therefore, appealed to well meaning Ghanaians to come to the aid of the victims.

Tidal wave in the Volta Region

The November 6 tidal wave brings to three this year, tidal wave disasters recorded in the Volta Region.

It is also the heaviest of all the three recorded this year.

Expert have blamed it on climate change and also human behavior.
