Support GJA to build secretariat: Northern GJA Chairman appeals to Ministers

The northern region chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has held an epic award night to reward deserving journalists practicing their trade in the Northern, North East and Savannah regions.

The awards night, which saw 9 journalists taking home awards from different categories was graced by Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture.

The northern region chairman of GJA, Mr. Yakubu Abdul-Majeed speaking on the event said the welfare of journalists in the region is paramount to the new leadership of the association. Speaking on the theme: promoting tourism and culture to create jobs: The role of the media, he encouraged journalists to report more on tourism potentials in the area.

He opined that if tourism potentials are developed in the regions to the fullest employment opportunities would be created for the teeming unemployed youth in the area. He called on regional Ministers from the Northern, North East and Savannah regions to support the GJA to put up a befitting secretariat to enhance the work of journalists in the region.

Fugu Mohammed, a regional correspondent of the Daily Graphic Newspaper was adjudged the northern region journalists of the year 2021.

He again won best tourism reporter and best Disability reporter which he jointly won with Joyce Kankam Kolamong of GBC Radio Savannah.

The other journalists who also won awards are: Christopher Amoako, Best Education Reporter,

TV3/Media General, Prince Kwame Tamakloe, Best Health Reporter, Rainbow Radio International; Joyce Kankam Kolamong, Best Water and Sanitation Award; Comfort Sena Fetiri, Best Road Safety Reporter,

Ghana News Agency,  Mohammed Alabira, Citi FM/TV, Best Rural Reporter and Eric Kombat, Best Agric Reporter, Daily Guide.

Awal, commended the effort of journalists in the region for helping the Regional Coordination Council to maintain peace in Dagbon and the entire northern region.

According to him, peace is a beacon of development across the world stressing that investors within and outside of the country cannot invest in the north if there is no peace. “Tourism will invite well-meaning investors to the region if it is well developed and there is absolute peace and that alone will create jobs for the unemployed youth”, he noted.

He pledged to support the GJA in the region with 50, 000 cedis to build the capacity of journalists working in the area.
