Wassa Subriso farmers call out chief for indiscriminately selling farmlands to illegal miners

Farmers in Wassa Subriso in the Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region are complaining about their Chief who is selling lands leading to their farms to illegal miners.

The farmers who spoke to Skyy Power 93.5FM said the chief has been selling land to others which they don’t have an issue with because it belongs to him but lands leading to their farms that have been sold is the problem.

According to them, the illegal miners have made it difficult to access their farms so the Government should come to their aid so that those lands can be reclaimed and left alone.

Speaking to the chief farmer, Amos, indicated agriculture is the backbone of the community and their products are essential to the region as well and such action by the chief and illegal miners can be very dangerous since it can collapse the agriculture industry in the community and also lead to food shortage in the region.

Also, the chief has sold his farms to others but the fact that lands that serve as a path to their farms have been sold to illegal miners is a problem.

“We can’t go to our farms now and do not earn any living and looking at the state of the lands, a bridge has to be built for us to get to our farms so we hope the Government comes to our aid,” Amos said.
