Vida Essel-LampteyThe Chief Executive Officer of the John A. Kufuor Foundation Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah has asked the two leading political parties in the country, the New Patriotic Party(NPP) and the National Democratic Congress(NDC) to stop bothering Ghanaians with what he described as political gymnastic.
He said Ghanaians deserve better and if the two parties don’t have any better alternative policies to offer then Ghanaians must be left to live in peace.
Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah was speaking on TV3 News360 on Wednesday, April 12 monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
“…..Look if you have not observed elections in this country since 1992, what you are witnessing will be surprise. I am not surprise by this. Towards every elections of this fourth republic, we tend to hear these kinds of what I will call pre-election gymnastic, pre-election comedies by the political parties, I am not surprise at all.
“Of cause in their struggles to retain power or to get power back to themselves these two political parties engage in needless agitations, putting Ghanaians, destroying their peace as I should say. Actually, I even feel a little bit uneasy discussing something that is so flimsy. I mean these guys should give us a break. They should put us on something higher than where they are putting us,”Professor Baffour Agyeman Duah .
“…And I think if they do not have any credible policy to share with the good people of Ghana, if they don’t have better things to tell the people of Ghana, over what they plan to do to arrest the deplorable situation we find yourself, if they don’t have alternative proposal then please let keep our peace,” he added.
Prof Baffour Agyeman-Duah was reacting calls made by the NDC and the NPP to have Minister for Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong and the former and President John Dramani Mahama and Asiedu Nketia, arrested, investigated and possibly prosecuted over what they said are treasonable comments.
This matter is flimsy – Prof Baffour Agyeman-Duah
The one time Special Advisor to former President John Agyekum Kufuor said the matter being pursued by the two political parties is flimsy.
“Well am using your words now, flimsy matters that is exactly what this is about. It is flimsy. But here we are expending our national energy and pressures time disusing something as you said is flimsy”.
NDC petition to arrest Bryan Acheampong
The NDC on Tuesday April 11 petitioned the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to immediately arrest and prosecute the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong over what they say is a treasonable comment made by him.
The MP while addressing a charged party supporters at Kwahu said the NPP will never hand over power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) come 2024.
According to him, the party will do everything possible to make sure it retains its position as the ruling government of the country.
“It will never happen for we the NPP party in power now, to stand on a platform and hand over power to the NDC, it will never happen, it will never happen, it will never happen, it will never happen. It will not,” Bryan Acheampong said.
“Anything possible that we will do to ensure that 2024 elections NPP will be in power, we will,” he added.
He also stated if the NPP will show the NDC they hae the men should they attempt any, violence aggressiveness and foolishness in 2024.
But the NDC petition said “That Your Petitioner says that the said Bryan Acheampong continued to say that they-NPP will show the NDC that the NPP have the men, and that the NPP will do everything possible-fair or foul means to remain in power come what may in the 2024 general elections. I enclose herein, audios and videos of the utterances of Hon Bryan Acheampong for your perusal”.
“That, in the estimation of Your Petitioner and those of the general public, the statements uttered by Bryan Acheampong could be interpreted to mean that the NPP has conceived a grand scheme to subvert the will of the people of Ghana in the 2024 elections and any attempt to resist them would be met with violence,” the petition further stated.
NPP petition ID to arrest Mahama, Asiedu Nketia
Barely 24hours after the NDC’s petition, the NPP also did same calling for the arrest of the party’s former leader and ex-President, John Dramani Mahama and Chairperson, Johnson Asiedu Nketia for same.
The petition was made by the party’s National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye.
