Speaker of Parliament declares Kumawu seat vacant

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford has declared vacate the Parliamentary seat of  the Kumawu Constituency in the Ashanti Region following the death of the Member of Parliament ,Philip Atta Basoah.

The Speaker made the declaration on Friday, March 31, before the house rose for the Ester festivities informing the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to initiate preparation to conduct a bye-election for the constituency.

Kumawu MP reported dead

Mr Atta Basoah, Member of Parliament for the Kumawu Constituency and Member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) was reported died on Tuesday, March 27 after a short illness.

Graphiconline report sighted by GhanaPlus.com said he died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was on admission receiving treatment.

He was 54 at the time of his death.

Philip Atta Basoah

Philip Atta Basoah was elected first as Member of Parliament for the Kumawu Constituency in 2016 and won again in the 2020 elections making him a second-timer in Ghana’s legislative house.

He was the Chairperson for Employment, Social Welfare and State Enterprises Committee, a member of Lands and Forestry Committee and also a member of the Selection Committee.

Mr Basoah was an educationalist and worked as a teacher at the Agogo Senior High School.

He also worked with the Ghana Education Service in the Ashanti Region and at the Ministry of Local Government for the Sekyere East District from June 2005 to January 2009 as District Chief Executive.
