2022 FIFA WC qualifiers: Nigeria to renew 71-year old rivalry with Ghana in March
Nigeria will renew their 71-year-old rivalry with their West African neighbours, Ghana when both battle for a single ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar.
CAF announced the epic pairing on Saturday in Douala, Cameroon during a draw in Douala, Cameroon.
This upcoming encounter is one that will be keenly watched by football fans in Accra and Abuja because of the known rivalry between the two countries.
Nigeria were stunned by Tunisia in the last 16 at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon while the Black Stars of Ghana were kicked out of the tournament with one point and placed last in Group C.
The Super Eagles are seeking to qualify for the global showpiece a 7th time and, since 1994, have missed only one of seven editions. The last of three appearances by Ghana was in 2014.
Four-time African champions Ghana will host the first leg with the reverse encounter in Nigeria, both to hold between 24th – 29th March.
