CAF Confederation Cup: Moroccan King congratulates winners Raja Casablanca
Moroccan King Mohamed VI called Raja Casablanca within minutes of the side’s Confederation Cup final victory against Algeria’s JS Kabylie in Benin.
Early goals from Soufiane Rahimi and Congolese Ben Malango were enough to secure a 2-1 win in Cotonou, with Kabylie’s second-half response from Mohamed Boulahia not enough.
“Moments ago, Raja Sports Club was honored to receive a phone call from His Majesty, King Mohammed VI, may God bless and support him,” the club tweeted.
The triumph is Raja’s second victory in three years, and adds to their tally of African titles.
They now have six, having won the Champions League three times (1989, 1997, 1999) and the Caf Cup in 2003.
Raja began this season’s African campaign in the Champions League but dropped into the Confederation Cup after a shock loss to Senegalese minnows Teungueth in the second qualifying phase.
Fans of Algerian club JS Kabylie had been savouring a first African final in 19 years but their late rally was not enough.
They suffered a first continental final defeat in seven appearances, so unable to add a first title since winning the Confederation Cup’s predecessor, the Caf Cup, for a third straight time in 2002.
The coronavirus pandemic meant there was a reduced capacity of 12,000 for the match but fans of both Kabylie and Raja were among them for the one-legged tie.
Supporters of two-time African champions Kabylie had been so excited ahead of the tie that within two days of a club shop opening for the very first time, all the merchandise had been bought.
Although the Algerian side managed to score only the third goal against Raja in 13 Confederation Cup games this season, the Moroccans held on to add to their inaugural 2018 triumph against DR Congo’s AS Vita Club.
Raja, who receive $1.25 million in prize money, will take on the winners of next weekend’s Champions League final between Egypt’s Al Ahly and South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs in the 2021 Caf Super Cup.
