Ghanaians react as Philemon Baffour inherits Asamoah Gyan’s iconic jersey at Black Stars
The senior national soccer team, Black Stars will for the first time in many years compete at the Africa Cup of Nations without Asamoah Gyan.
The all-time topscorer for Ghana who is currently without a club was excluded from Milovan Rajevac’s squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations though he is yet to announce his retirement from professional football.
Ahead of the AFCON tournament in Cameroon, the Serbian trainer on Monday named his final 28-man squad for the continental showpiece.
The squad numbers of each player were also revealed with Dreams FC right-back, Philemon Baffour being handed Asamoah Gyan’s iconic number 3 jersey.
However, Ghanaians on social media has called for the number to be retired in honour of Gyan, who is Ghana’s most-capped player and all-time top scorer.
But others also believe there is nothing wrong giving the striker’s favourite number to another player.
The much-anticipated tournament will kick start on Sunday, January 9, 2022 at the Central Africa country.
Ghana will take on Morocco in their opening game at the tournament on Monday.
