GPL, DOL, others to use 5 substitutions permanently

The Ghana Premier League, Division One League and other local football competitions will continue to allow for clubs to make five substitutions during matches permanently following a latest development from IFAB.

The decision to make the initiative permanent will be made by football’s lawmakers next month.

It is expected that the temporary dispensation to allow up to five changes in a game — introduced after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to help clubs manage fixture congestion — will be made a permanent option for competitions worldwide at the International Football Association Board’s annual general meeting on March 3.

IFAB has previously recommended all competitions move to allowing five substitutions. The Ghana Football Association only allowed for this to take effect for the current 2021-22 football season.

But now it looks likely to continue for a very long time.
