There is a strong Spanish influence in Equatorial Guinea’s team
Equatorial Guinea relied largely on its migrant community in Spain for their Africa Cup of Nations team, which was announced on Monday.
Coach Juan Micha selected 16 Spanish-born players for the event, which begins on January 9 in Cameroon.
It features captain Emilio Nsue, who formerly played for Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, and Carlos Akapo, who currently plays for Cadiz in LaLiga.
The great majority of the players are at local teams in the lowest stages of league football in Spain, the small central African country’s former colonial power.
After co-hosting the 2012 tournament and hosting on their own in 2015, Equatorial Guinea will be making its third finals appearance, but the first as qualifiers.
On January 12, they will participate in Group E against the Ivory Coast in Douala. Algeria and Sierra Leone are also included in the group.
