Wahab Ackwei joins USL club Rio Grande Valley FC

Rio Grande Valley FC officially confirmed that it has signed defender Wahab Ackwei, subject to league and federation permission, ahead of the 2022 USL Championship season.

Ackwei joins the Toros after playing in both the USL Championship and League One. During the 2021 season, the former Inter Allies player played for Championship team Loudoun United FC, where he had 23 clearances, 16 interceptions, and six blocks in nine matches. Ackwei formerly played for the New York Red Bulls ll in the Championship in 2018, making seven appearances.

Ackwei has also played in League One with the Richmond Kickers, where he made 39 appearances in all competitions over two seasons in 2019-20.

Ackwei won League One All-League Second Team accolades in 2019 while at the Kickers, as he tied for fourth in the league with 49 interceptions while also registering 97 clearances and 22 tackles at a 75.9 percent success rate.

The now 25-year-old played for Inter Allies FC in Ghana’s Premier League between 2014 and 2017, making 23 appearances.
