A 14-year-old girl and a Covid-19 patient at India’s 10,000-bed Sardar Patel COVID Care Centre in Chhatarpur, New Delhi have been raped.
A report by CNN, on Friday, July 24, 2020, indicated that the girl who was seeking treatment at the center was raped by a 19-year-old boy who was equally at the facility for Covid-19 treatment after testing positive to the disease.
The rape was reported to have taken place in an isolated area of the center on July 16, 2020.
“Police first registered the incident on July 16, when the girl’s family reported the alleged attack,” the report said.
The teenager was reported to have carried out the act with the help of a 20-year-old man.
“The two did not know each other beforehand, the rape took place in an isolated area at the center and a 20-year-old man, a friend of the 19-year-old, assisted in the crime,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Parvinder Singh told the CNN.
‘The girl alleged that the 20-year-old also recorded the rape on his phone. We are investigating this as well as the rape charge,” Singh added.
Suspect Arrested
The rapist has since been arrested together with his accomplice and the case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) act, the police said.
According to the report, the suspects have been held under judicial custody at a government hospital to continue their Covid-19 treatment, while their 14-year-old victim was currently receiving treatment at a different government facility.
