I do not regret appointing Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor – Akufo –Addo

Vida Essel-LampteyThe President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said he has no regret appointing Mr Martin Amidu as the country’s first Special Prosecutor despite the circumstance that saw him out of office some month ago.
“In spite of the unfortunate event that led to the departure of the first occupant of the office, I do not regret making that appointment on my part”.
The President made the remarks at the swearing in of the Special Prosecutor, Mr Kissi Agyebeng at the Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday, August 5 monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
He noted he and the New Patriotic Party(NPP)’s quest to fight corruption saw the appointment of Mr Amidu, a very serious figure from the opposition side to establish and head the office despite stiff opposition adding he believed the office was adequately resourced to perform it functions as established.
“Ladies and gentlemen, my party the New Patriotic Party and I came to office in 2017 with the commitment and indeed with an overwhelming mandate from the Ghanaian people to fashion an additional instrument to fight the canker of corruption that had taken firm root in every expect of national life and was visibly glare at the heart of the Ghanaian state.
The genuineness of that commitment to create an independent non partisan body with the relevant professional capabilities to lead the fight and hold official past and present accountable for the stewardship of public finances was made manifest in the appointment of a very serious figure from the opposition side of the political device to establish and head this very significant office”
In spite of the unfortunate event that led to the departure of the first occupant of the office, I do not regret making that appointment on my part as a the President of the Republic I am sure the office was adequately resourced to enable it carry out its mandate however, am however consoled by the off sighted statement it is of no use crying over spoil milk,” the President said.
Martin Amidu resigns from Special Prosecutor duties
Mr Martin Amidu, Ghana’s first Special Prosecutor on November 16, last year, tended his resignation letter to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He attributed his decision to quit his anti-corruption office among other things, to public reactions over his report on the controversial Agyapa Royalties Limited Transaction, remuneration of his office, lack or resources, political interference etc.
