LGBTQ Bill: Am against it, am not shy to say – Gabby

A Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Founder of the Dankwa Institute, Mr Gabby Otchere Darko has expressed his stiff opposition to the Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill currently before Parliament.

According to him he is against the bill and he is not shy to claim same publicly.

Mr Otchere Darko was speaking in a twitter post sighed by GhanaPlus.com on Thursday, November 12.

He noted although, he was a proud Ghanaians and cherish the Ghanaian value systems he will defend the right of minorities everywhere.

Mr Otchere Darko said Ghana’s value system include tolerance hence his decision to support and defend all minorities at all times.

“I am against the anti-gay bill & not shy to say so. I am a proud Ghanaian who cherishes all that is good about our value systems, including tolerance. And, I will defend the right of minorities everywhere. I have the courage and a sense of justice to disagree with the majority,” Mr Otchere Darko’s tweet reads.

Ghana LGBTQ+ bill

The Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, a bill sponsored by renowned Members of Parliament to protect the Ghanaian family system and cultural value is currently before Parliament.

The bill among other things, seeks to protect the country’s family value system and curtail the activities of LGBTQ+ in the country.

It’s also seeks to criminalize their activities to some extent , offer medical and rehabilitation as well as protect persons within the community from societal abuse.

Again, the bill when passed will prevent LGBTQ+ individuals from adopting children in Ghana.

The bill although, supported by many Ghanaians, including the church and traditional authorities have been met with stiff opposition from a section of the academia.

They have described the bill as flawed, an affront to the country’s constitution and also gains made in the areas of fundamental human right.
