Ministry of Education justifies dismissal of Chiana students says their actions warrant the punishment

The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Mr Yaw Opoku Mensah has justified the dismissal of the eight students of Chiana Senior High School over the unsavory utterances they made against the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In an interview with TV3 on Thursday, January 12 monitored by GhanaPlus.com, he said the actions of the students warrant the punishment that was given them.

According to him, all though the punish is harsh its purpose is to deter others who intend doing same in the near future adding that punishment meted for any undeserving behaviour is harsh and must be deterrent enough.

“Every action which is meted out to any undeserving behaviour is harsh but you ask yourself is that decision in the best interest of the system. Punishment should be deterrent enough so that others who will want to do same will crawl back to their shelf,” Mr Opoku Mensah said.

“The actions of the such students warrant the appropriate sanctions which have been given them,” he justified.

Our doors are open- Opoku Mensah

Many have also called on the GES to temper justice with mercy and allow the girls back to school.

Speaking on the calls, Mr Opoku Mensah said their doors are open for any discussions for clemency.

“We do anticipate if it comes with that compassion that we do have. Within this space people will want to call for lenience, for compassion for them and it an open society, we can have that discussions but we are particular about the number of students that this influence will not get to them,” he said

“The office of the Director General is always open and we will welcome any suggestions which comes or any dialogue which comes we wouldn’t close our door to anybody”.
