Vida Essel-LampteyCelebrated Ghanaian Journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni has responded to persons who have expressed displeasure about the $28m loan agreement for MPs to buy cars.
Speaking on GhOne Television’s current affairs programme, GhToday on Friday, July 9, monitored by GhanaPlus.com he said members of the Council of State, an advisory body to the President whom he described as useless have luxurious vehicles.
He indicated some of the Council of State members had full time jobs outside the council duties, however use the state vehicles as part of their privileges.
“If you look at that list, we have the members of the Council of State taken 26000, I think that Council of State is a useless office in my view, it has no use because if we look at what the presidency does and I have been here long to see some of the unquestionable decisions that the president have taken so if the Council of State have an input that should inform those decisions, they wouldn’t come up,” he said.
“So I don’t really see the use of the council of State, there are just there and they even have vehicles so if you are saying why should we even give an MP a vehicles, some Council of State members are full time workers somewhere and they still have land cruisers and others to go to work,” Manasseh added.
Finance Ministry request $28m loan agreement to buy cars for MPs
The Deputy Minister of Finance Abena Osei Asare on Wednesday July 7, presented to Parliament a request by government for a $28 million loan from the National Investment Bank to finance the purchase of 275 vehicles for the members of the eighth Parliament.
The medium-term loan agreement is between the government, represented by the Finance Ministry, members of the 8th Parliament and the National Investment Bank Limited.
It is expected to be paid in four years with the beneficiaries paying 60 percent(60%) while government footing the remaining forty percent(40%).
The news, however, had not gone down well with the Ghanaian public especially in the face of the current hardship in the country.
