Vida Essel-LampteyJournalist and Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Mr Kwesi Pratt Jnr has quizzed the reasons behind the Defence Minister’s justification of the President use of luxurious jet during his recent travels.
The Minister, Dominic Nitiwul while addressing Parliament about the President recent luxurious trip to France, Belgium and South Africa said the country’s presidential jet was among many other reasons lacked some facilities despite its being airworthy adding on such trips the president needs to freshen up.
Speaking on Pan African TV’s Good Morning Africa on Thursday, September 30, monitored by GhanaPlus.com, Mr Kwasi Pratt questioned if there was anything wrong with the President body which requires him to freshen up every six hours while in the plane.
“Now listen to the defence of the Defence Minister. What did the Defence Minister say, that the president sometimes when he travels and he is about to get to the country where he is going, he needs to freshen up. Ma Sir, what is so wrong with the body of our President that when he takes his bath in Accra and put on his deodorant and lavender and get on board the air craft within six hours he has to bath again and put on deodorant. Is there something wrong. Is there a medical condition? I don’t know but this is the justification,” he said.
Ghana to buy bigger Presidential jet
He made the comment while speaking about the government decision to purchase a bigger presidential jet for the country following recent public outcry over the president essence use of luxurious fight during official trips outside the country.
The President in a spate of two month had been reported to have embarked on three luxurious travels costing the country huge sums of money.
Inwhat it seem as a responds to the public outcry, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin on Monday, September 27 at a press briefing announced the government had begun processes to acquire a bigger jet for the country.
The decision, he said was to aid travels of the President and key state functionaries since the current presidential jet had proven inadequate for the purpose.
It is also to reduce the huge cost incurred anytime the president travels out of the country using hired private jet.
The news of the new aircraft, however, had also been received with several backlash as many were of the opinion that it was a total waste of state resources.
The opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) had sworn to resist and oppose the decision by the government to purchase the new aircraft.
