Vida Essel-LampteyThe former National Chairman of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah has said the 2022 budget is intended to dim chances of the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to led the New Patriotic Party as it presidential candidate in 2024.
That he said was because everything in the budget was in deviation from what Dr Bawumia has been advocating for since he became Vice President of the country.
Mr Mornah said, going down memory lane, everything Dr Bawumia has said has been captured in the budget, however, in opposite of what he said.
“I honestly think that this budget is aim at dimming any chance of Bawumia becoming presidential candidate. Because the content of this budget is at variant at everything Bawumia has been preaching and so if they decided that budget paragraph by paragraph they will play everything Bawumia has said, it is to dim the chances of Bawumia becoming the presidential candidate of the NPP,” Mr Mornah.
Mr Mornah was speaking on Good Morning Africa on Pan Africa Television on Friday, November 19, monitored by GhanaPlus.com.
He was reacting to the 1.75% charge on all electronic transactions above ₵100.

The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori Atta in accordance with Article 179 of the 1992 constitution of Ghana on Wednesday, November 17, presented ‘The Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government of Ghana for the 2022 Financial Year” to Parliament
The budget tagged “Agenkwa Budget” announced some additional taxes including a e-levy which includes a 1.75 percent charge on all electronic transactions above ₵100 , something the Vice President has been speaking against.
Bawumia digitization, cashless society, taxation to production agenda
The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has among other things been championing the country’s digitization and e-money or cashless agenda for years now.
In has also on many platforms touted government will focus on production and industrialization instead of taxation.
In an earlier interview, he said he does not believe Momo users should be taxed since majority of the users were within the poor bracket in the country.
I don’t think Mobile Money should be taxed because most of the people who use the service are very poor people so if you put more taxes on it they will suffer,” he told Kwami Sefa Kayi in that interview.
However, with the introduction of the 1.75% Momo tax, many fear that was a direct attack on the Vice President’s integrity as well as gains made in the sector.
