E-Levy: I want to support the NDC – A Plus

Ghanaian musician and politician, Kwame Asare Obeng, Kwame, A Plus has said he wishes to support the opposition National Democratic Congress in its fight against the government’s proposed electronic transaction levy (e-levy).

However, what is stopping him from doing so is the fact that, the NDC will maintain the levy when they eventually return to power if government manage to push through with its implementation.

According to him, that has been the norm since time in memorial adding politician will oppose one tax or the other while in opposition and find justifications to maintain it or even enhance them eventually when the tables turn in their favour.

The one time New Patriotic Party(NPP) stalwart made the comment on TV3 NewDay on Thursday, January 27, monitored by GhanaPlus.com.

“…..From kumipreko days, Akufo Addo demonstrated against kumipreko, made all the noise and people died. NPP came to power and increase vat, it has gone on and on, today it is e-levy. NDC will oppose e-levy, they will oppose, the day they come to power they won’t cancel. Even if they pass it today, NDC will come to power, they will not cancel it they will increase it or they will keep it the way it is,” A Plus noted.

“I want to support NDC in their fight against e-levy. I want them to have a press conference, call all Ghanaians and tell them that if levy is passed when we come to power, we will cancel it. They should bring everybody together and make this statement. They will not but what is this whole fight and noise. You will come and benefit, they will come and enjoy this money. If NDC should come to power today, they will explained why it is now importation, why it wasn’t important when NPP was in power,” A Plus said.

Am against E-levy –A Plus

A Plus said he is against the proposed e-levy which seeks to tax some 1.75% on electronic transfers above ₵100 including mobile money transactions  applicable to senders.

He also added he is against all other taxes because the monies generated are not used for the intended purposes.

Gov’t of Ghana introduce Momo Tax

 The government of Ghana in its 2022 Budget Statement  announced a 1.75% electronic transaction levy applicable on all MoMo transaction exceeding ₵100.

The Finance Minister who presented the budget to Parliament on Wednesday, November 17 said the levy will help widen the tax net and rope in the informal sector into the country tax system.

“After considerable deliberations, the government has decided to place a levy on all electronic transactions to widen the tax net and rope in the informal sector. This shall be known as the “Electronic Transaction Levy or E-Levy”, Mr Ofori-Atta told Parliament.

However, Ghanaians have rejected the levy on the basis it will worsen the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian.

Already, the levy has cause so much disturbances in Parliament, two of which has resulted in physical attacks.
