MP for Sekondi and member of the ruling New Patriotic party, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer has said the ousted Member of Parliament for Assin North, Jame Gyakye Quayson will be incarcerated.

Speaking on Big Issue on Tv3 NewDay on Monday, June 19, 2023, monitored by GhanaPlus.com, he said he has no doubt that will happen looking at past precedent, citing the case of Adamu Daramani Sakande, a member of Ghana’s Fifth Parliament of the Fourth Republic representing the Bawku Central Constituency who was found guilty and jailed two years for perjury and forgery.

Mr Sakande was said to be a holder of both British and Burkinabe passports as 2008 when he was eleted as MP for Bawku Central.

“…..This gentleman, I don’t know the NDC is abusing him, the Gyakye Quayson man, he is willingly participating in that abuse,”Mr Egyapa Mercer said.

“…Of cause, I am very clear in my mind that he is headed for jail based on Adamu Sakande’s precedent that was set that if you make a declaration which turns to be false you have committed a crime against section 180 of the Criminal Offense Act and you will be incarcerated and I expect that he will go to jail” he added. 

Gyakye Quayson faces charges of Forgery, deceit of public among others

Mr Gyakye Quayson is facing five counts; deceit of a public officer, forgery of a passport, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration following the annulment of his 2020 election as MP for Assin North.

He is said to have falsely denied owing allegiance to another country other than Ghana during the 2020 electoral process which led to his election as the MP for Assin North constituency

Mr Gyakye Quayson’s election have since been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of Ghana and a by- election ordered by same.

The Electoral Commission has set June 29 to hold the by-election which Mr Gyakye Quayson is contesting  to be giving another node by his people to represent them in Parliament.
