CK Akonnor's hands were tied in Black Stars player call up - Jerome Otchere

Respected football journalist, Jerome Otchere has taken a swipe at the Ghana Football Association [GFA] after the sacking of CK Akonnor as Black Stars head coach.

Akonnor and his assistant, David Duncan and Patrick Greveraars have been shown the exit in a statement by the FA after an Executive Council meeting.

This decision emerges after the Black Stars poor start of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars sit 3rd in Group G with three points after winning their opener against Ethiopia and losing to South Africa in an away game.

However, Jerome, who is a former Communications Manager for Asante Kotoko believes the decision not to allow CK Akonnor to do his job independently as the head coach of the national team has resulted to his sacking.

“CK Akonnor was never given the freedom to select his own players as the head coach of the team,” he told Citi News.

“You appoint a coach to work for the interest of the country so why don’t you allow him to work rather than forcing him to do things he was not interested in and imposing players on him.

“It was wrong on the part of the Football Association to do that. Now CK Akonnor and we must learn from that.”

Jerome also reiterated that it is about the country agree for an appointment of an expatriate gaffer.

“If I am to stick my neck out, I will opt for an expatriate coach for the Black Stars because we cannot bring in local coaches and disrespect them at the end of the day,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Executive Council has formed a three (3) Member Committee made up of Vice President Mark Addo, Upper East Regional Football Association Chairman, Alhaji Salifu Zida and Dr Randy Abbey to find a head coach and Assistant Coaches for the Black Stars within the next 72 hours.

The Black Stars will resume their qualifiers for the global showpiece next month with a doubleheader against Zimbabwe.
