Timothy Fosu-Mensah becomes preferred candidate to replace compatriot Jeremie Frimpong in Bayer Leverkusen set up due to injury

Timothy Fosu Mensah has become the preferred candidate to fill the void created by Jeremie Frimpong at Bayer Leverkusen due to his injury.

The Dutch-born Ghanaian defender was ruled out of action for the rest of the season with a serious injury last week and is expected to spend time on the sideline for some months.

The 21-year-old defender will return to action after the end of the current campaign because of a syndesmotic ligament tear.

Frimpong, a former player for Scottish giants Celtic picked up an injury last weekend when Leverkusen suffered a 1-0 defeat to FC Cologne.

He was subbed off after just 13 minutes with fellow Ghanaian player Timothy Fosu-Mensah replacing him in the game.

Fosu Mensah, who featured for English giants, Manchester United before joining Leverkusen is expected to play until the end of the season due to the absence of his compatriot.

Frimpong’ injury is a huge opportunity for Fosu Mensah to cement his place in the Leverkusen team who has struggled for playing time since joining the club.

Meanwhile, the Amsterdam born defender will now have to wait to make his debut for the Dutch national team due to the injury.

He earned his first call up to represent the Dutch national team for friendlies against Denmark and Germany this month.
