Joseph Yammin

The former Deputy Sports Minister in the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration and member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Joseph Yammin has said he does not agree with the party’s approach of challenging the Electoral Commission’s proposed electoral reforms verbally and with press conferences.

Speaking on Pan African Television’s Alhaji and Alhaji current affairs programme of Saturday, May 22 monitored by GhanaPlus.com, he said although the press conference were to some extent good what was required was the party’s won plans to counter that of the EC in case they proceed with the proposed reforms.

“I don’t agree to challenge it verbally or putting informal complaints or positions like press conferences and others, yes it good to address, let the people know our stands but we should have behind the press conferences and the opposition verbally to put in place strategies to counter whatever move they intend to do,” he said.

Have your own plan if we want to win 2024 elections

According to him such plans were missing at the moment adding if the NDC intends to win the next elections then such plans to enable them work around the plans of the EC was essential.

He maintained the EC would not back down on its proposed reforms judging from past experience and advised the NDC be a step ahead of the EC.

“From previous years, I mean the Jean Mensa administration, it has become clear that what the EC intend to do no matter how strong the opposition is ,  they will still want to go ahead with it so it bring to my point that, yes we the political parties and in this instance am talking about my political party NDC should have in mind that the Electoral Commission is bent on doing what they will want to do and from past experience am not sure they will want to change their mind knowing very well that there is no force in this country to be able to push them to do what is rightfully mention so we should be prepared as a political party to work around their plans. To me is a rigging plan, it is a plan put in place to ensure that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and the NPP continue to stay in office but we should also have a plan around their plan and that is what will be our security,” he said.

“For instance if they intend to go with the registration all year round what we will do as a political party to ensure that our people get to register, our people are not prevented from registering and that is what is lacking today and if they NDC really want to win the election, we should be working around the Electoral Commission and their plans and I think we have what it takes to do that, it all about planning,” he added.

NDC Rubbish EC’s electoral reforms

Mr Yammin’s comment was in reaction to proposed reforms announced by the Electoral Commission some days ago and a follow up press conference organized by the NDC to rubbish the proposed reforms.
