NPP, NDC only critique, they don’t give precise solutions - Dr Mawutor

A Senior Lecturer of the University of Professional Studies (UPS) in Accra, Dr Kweku Mensah Mawutor has called for a national conversation to address the challenges that confront the country.

Speaking on Pan African TV’s Good Morning Africa on Wednesday, February 9, he said the two major political parties have over the years only critique whenever problems arises, however, have not profess any suitable solutions to address them.

“The major problem I have with politicians in this country. We always flung the issues, we always flung the problem but we don’t look at the long term solution to solve the problem. That has been the bin of this country,” he said on the programme monitored by GhanaPlus.com.

“Look, none of these two parties have gone beyond speculative status before and the speculative status simply tells you that there is some level of risk when it comes to settling of your debt, none of them so the question is there should be that conversation, a national conversation and come out with very good plans which will cascade into every part of the economy to address the problem. Today it is NPP, tomorrow it will be NDC, the next moment, we don’t know which party will come in,” he said.

We need a non-political conversation to fix Ghana’s problems – Dr Mawutor

Dr Mawutor noted irrespective of which political party is power, the country must have that non-political conversation to find lasting solutions to the problems.

“But as a country these are the things that we have to look at without any partisan consideration but the unfortunate thing is that each of them whenever, they have the opportunity will only critique without given the precise answers to solve the problem”.

Dr Mawutor made the comment while contributing to discussions on the current international rating of Ghana’s economy.

Fitch, Moody downgrade Ghana’s credit rating

Fitch, an international rating agency recently downgraded Ghana’s credit rating from B to B- with a negative outlook.

A report by the rating agency said “this comes in the context of uncertainty about the government’s ability to stabilise debt and against a backdrop of tightening global financing conditions. In our view, Ghana’s ability to deliver on planned fiscal consolidation efforts could be hindered by the heavier reliance on domestic debt issuance with higher interest costs, in the context of already exceptionally high interest expenditure to revenue ratio.”

Moody, also a rating agency have downgraded Ghana’s long term issuer and senior unsecured debt ratings from B3 to Caa1 with a stable economic outlook.
