Vida Essel-LampteyManaging Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Mr Kwesi Pratt Jnr has taken a swipe at Parliament following the impasses which has characterized it proceedings in recent times.
Speaking on Good Morning Africa on Pan Africa Television monitored by GhanaPlus.com on Thursday, December 2, he said Parliament is an important medium in the country hence the development was an affront to its reputation.
Mr Pratt Jnr described the development as disreputable and imaginable adding they are not behaving any better than rat, if members of Parliament are capable of misbehaving to the extent of grabbing ballot papers and chew them.
“I think it is important to first and foremost appreciate the important of Parliament in this current dispensation. Parliament is the forum at which our future and present is decided. How we build the country, how we allocate resources and so on. It an important forum and because it is an important forum, it should not be reduce to a circus. Unfortunately over the last one year or maybe more what is happening in parliament does not give us comfort at all” he said.
“ The impression is gradually and surely we are turning parliament into circus, a funny circus. You see when you have a situation and I have said this a couple of times when members of parliament can actually misbehave to the extent of grabbing ballot paper in the chamber and chew them, those members are not behaving any better than rats,” Mr Pratt Jnr added.
Your behaviour is scandalous, unimaginable – Pratt Jnr
“They are not behaving any better than rat. Members of Parliament can grab ballot papers and chew and swallow, they are not better than rat and this is so disreputable, is unimaginable”.
Seventh Parliament
Ghana’s 8th Parliament has been characterized with series of spectacles since 7th January, the night of its inauguration and election of its speaker, through to the approval of ministers and presently the approval of the 2022 budget.
On November 26, the majority staged a walk out over its own budget approval citing the presence of the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia as one of it reasons.
The budget was subsequently rejected by the minority.
The decision has since been over turned by the Majority and the budget approved thereafter.
Just yesterday, a report emerged following a brawl in the chamber, the Minority in Parliament, the NDC MPs hauled the seat of sit-in Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu, , a First Deputy Speaker and MP for Bekwai, after he suspended sitting for an hour.
