The Minority Leader of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has said the Minority Caucus will do what it takes to make the Majority Caucus appreciate their importance in the house following their decision to walk out on them on Thursdays.

The Majority walk out of Parliament when the Speaker, Kingsford Alban Sumana Bagbin called for secret voting in accordance with Article 82 of the 1992 Constitution on the censure motion the Minority moved on Mr Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking on GhanaTonight on TV3 on Thursday, December 8, monitored by GhanaPlus.com, Mr Iddrisu said ….. “Since the Majority could walk out on us we will see what we will do in the coming days so that they will appreciate that we are relevant and necessary.

We will not support debt restructuring, VAT increment, E-levy – Haruna Iddrisu

He also revealed the house will not support the approval of the 2.5% VAT increment, the e-levy as well as government’s debt restructuring programme announced in the 2023 budget statement.

“There are proposals in the budget that the minority feels very strongly about. We are simply against them and we are not supporting their approval on the floor.  2.5% Vat levy is one, the debt exchange initiative is two. E-levy without a threshold or without an adjustment up to 0.50% may be problematic for us even though lowering the threshold to 1.5% from to 1% may satisfy a category of people, our position on that have not change,” Mr Iddrisu said.

“….but since the Majority could walk out on us we will see what we will do in the coming days so that they will appreciate that we are relevant and necessary,” the National Democratic Congress’ MP threatened.

Ofori-Atta survives vote of censure

The Minority’s motion of vote censure on Mr Ken Ofori-Atta on Thursday, December 8, hit a dead end when the majority staged a walk out during voting in Parliament.

3news.com report the 136 Members of Parliament of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) votes could not secure the two-third constitutional membership of the house required for the censure to remove him the minister from office.
