Majority, Minority brawls in Parliament over 2022 budget
Ghana’s Parliament have become chaotic in the last one week or more following a misunderstanding between the Majority and the Minority over the 2022 budget presented to the house by the government.
The budget, dubbed ‘Agenkwa budget‘ has been vehemently opposed by Minority who were of the view it does not provide any hope for the struggling Ghanaian.
They have opposed among other things the 1.75% electronic transaction levy proposed on mobile money transactions above ₵100.
The Minority have also called for the reintroduction of 50% bench mark value enjoyed by exporters withdrawn by the 2022 budget statement.
The budget was subsequently rejected by the Minority led by the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin when the majority staged a walk out on November 26.
The decision has however, been reversed by the Majority led by the Deputy First Speaker, Joe Osei Owusu a sit-him speaker in the absent of the Speaker who is currently out of the country on a medical tripe.
The budget has also been approve by the Majority without the Minority and in the absence of the Speaker of Parliament.
